LE-03: THEORY X AND THEORY Y MANAGERS

Any organization consists of majorly two entities – Managers and Employees. The entire functioning of the organization is based on the kinds of interaction between these two entities. The Theory X and Theory Y managers along with the behavior of the employees give rise to four different scenarios in an organization.

1.)Theory X managers and Employees are lazy :- Theory X manager are those whose inherently feel that their employees are lazy, they lack self-motivation and do not want to work. In this particular case, the development of the organization will slow down as the employees are not given any motivation or incentive to improve their performance.

2.)Theory X managers and Employees are not lazy:-This situation is one of the most dangerous for any organization as the employees who are  performing well are not given any motivation to continue doing so. The work culture in this deteriorates highly in the company which may lead to large exodus.
3.)Theory Y managers and Employees are lazy:- Theory Y managers are those who feel that their employees are self-motivated to do the work and are hard working. In this case the managers may be able to motivate the employee to better their performance by giving them various incentives. This may lead to growth of the organization in a due course of time.

4.)Theory Y managers and Employees are not lazy:-This particular situation is the best for any company to be in. Its employees are not lazy and they are also getting due reward of their hard work and diligence. The mangers feel that their employees are doing good work which lead leads to an overall great working culture in the organization. These organization is able to achieve its objectives and can grow continuously in the long run.

Therefore every organization should try to achieve Scenario-4 which can be achieved by having more Theory Y managers in the firm who can promote good working culture in the organization which will help it to grow.

LE-02: TOWER BUILDING EXERCISE

In the case of tower building exercise we were asked to predict the maximum number of cubes in the tower so that it can stand . It involved putting one square block over the over to achieve the maximum height possible till the tower fell down. The practical exercise yielded a value of 18. The following observations were noted down regarding the experiment.

  • Some of the student ambitiously predicted more than the attained goal. This particular prediction may have been true had the experiment be performed again resulting in better results
  • Many predicted a value less than that which was achieved. This is unsuited as it may lead to underachievement of the full capacity.

When the experiment was asked to be performed again but only with a condition that the person making the tower will be blind-folded some interesting observations were noted.

  •  Maximum number of the student decreased their predicted value from the earlier case. This particular conservative attitude should not be there in a manager as it would act as a hindrance in the progress of the organization.and may lead to under utilization.
  • Few students maintained their values . This attitude is preferred as one stick to predefined targets even during tough times which leads to achieving objectives through teamwork and co-ordination.
  • Only one of the student raised his value despite the tougher conditions. These are examples of  good mangers who help their companies to expand even during the toughest of times.

Therefore, the whole tower building exercise is based on understanding one major principle of management i.e. Goal Setting.
