LE-02: TOWER BUILDING EXERCISE

In the case of tower building exercise we were asked to predict the maximum number of cubes in the tower so that it can stand . It involved putting one square block over the over to achieve the maximum height possible till the tower fell down. The practical exercise yielded a value of 18. The following observations were noted down regarding the experiment.

  • Some of the student ambitiously predicted more than the attained goal. This particular prediction may have been true had the experiment be performed again resulting in better results
  • Many predicted a value less than that which was achieved. This is unsuited as it may lead to underachievement of the full capacity.

When the experiment was asked to be performed again but only with a condition that the person making the tower will be blind-folded some interesting observations were noted.

  •  Maximum number of the student decreased their predicted value from the earlier case. This particular conservative attitude should not be there in a manager as it would act as a hindrance in the progress of the organization.and may lead to under utilization.
  • Few students maintained their values . This attitude is preferred as one stick to predefined targets even during tough times which leads to achieving objectives through teamwork and co-ordination.
  • Only one of the student raised his value despite the tougher conditions. These are examples of  good mangers who help their companies to expand even during the toughest of times.

Therefore, the whole tower building exercise is based on understanding one major principle of management i.e. Goal Setting.
